Liam O'Neil here. But if you're one of the suckers that listen to my music, you'd know me by Crusty Cuts. Grew up in the middle of the woods in Vermont, had the opportunity to go to high school in Burlington which is the probably closest thing we have to a "city". Even though it's a really, really small place, it exposed me to so many different urban sub-cultures that I wouldn't have been in my home town.
While I've been at the DJ/Producer thing for years now, I have yet to produce a physical project that's entirely my own. Over the years I've done solo DJ sets, DJ sets with/for other artists, and even had my work featured on other artists albums, but I've never produced physical copies of a DJ Crusty Cuts project. I believe that the next step for me to make it as a music producer, is to be able to release a project that shows my versatility as an artist. By doing this, I hope to not only attract new fans and empower listeners through my music, but also to have a cohesive project that I can shop to record labels and more well known artists who may take interest and be able to help me take that next step on my journey.
What I do matters because I believe that music has a way of connecting and empowering people through shared experience. When I take the experiences from my life and convert them into an instrumental, I'm creating a harmony that I know people will feel and connect to for the simple fact that I feel and connect to it. Even though my exact experiences are unique to me, the themes are prevalent throughout humanity, and as a music producer I see it as my job to create material that let's people know that whatever it is they're feeling, other people feel it too.
If I were to win this Fuel for Thought grant, I'd use the money to press my first round of vinyl. Having my music available as a physical entity would not only be a dream come true, but it would also be a step in the right direction for me as a musician, as having physical copies of my music would legitimize myself as an artist in the eyes of label execs.
